Family Fun! – Austin’s Park

No one ever has to feel like a grown-up at Austin’s Park. The mega-playland boasts more than 100 arcade and video games, laser tag, a rock climbing wall, and 22 acres of outdoor play space, including go-karts, bumper boats, spinning teacups, mini-golf, batting cages and more. Less than $20 grants you a day of nonstop fun, and if your energy starts to falter in the middle of it all, you can indulge in the park’s unlimited pizza, salad and sweets buffet — all of which is included with admission. Play your cares away like nobody’s looking, and win a stuffed animal while you’re at it. Your inner eight-year-old will thank you.

Live Band Karaoke @ Highball

We’re all familiar with two generally-accepted styles of karaoke: the traditional approach (which takes place in private rooms equipped with video screens) and the western approach (involving a stage and an audience and almost always at least one regrettable vocal styling of “Islands in the Stream” or “Love Shack”). The good folks at The Highball on South Lamar, however, take the experience to a whole new level by providing a live backing band onstage. That’s right – a live band of real musicians, ready to play any of the hundred or so songs on its approved songlist while you you live out your three and a half minutes of fame, unleashing your inner rock star onstage. The next event of its kind is this Tuesday, and admission is free.

Living Room @ W Austin

After years of planning, stop-and-start construction, and cries of praise and cries alike from local residents, the much-anticipated W hotel finally opened its doors in the heart of the 2nd Street District late last year. Its bar, The Living Room, leads patrons through four distinct experiences informally referred to as “the record room” chocked floor-to-ceiling with classic vinyl, “the secret bar” boasting state-of-the-art acoustics, “the fireplace room” with a sizeable – wait for it – fireplace, and “the red room,” a sumptuous space that looks exactly the way it sounds. Each quadrant of the bar feels metropolitan but cozy in its own way, and offers wi-fi, board games, a lush variety of local and international spirits and small plates for nibbling late into the night.
