Barley Swine

If you like the offerings of the Odd Duck Farm to Trailer food truck on South Lamar, you’ll love the fare at Barley Swine, a restaurant recently opened by Odd Duck’s manager Bryce Gilmore (formerly of local favorites Wink and Moonshine). A self-described “intimate communal dining space” in South Austin, Barley Swine offers a rustic menu with ever-evolving seasonal ingredients, beers and wines. With items like fried Brussels sprouts, jerk rubbed pork belly, and bacon-wrapped rabbit, we’re more than intrigued.

Pecan Street Festival – Spring 2011

Photo Credit – Peter Tsai (austinphotobook.com)

Austin sure does love its outdoor festivals… so much so that it holds one of its longest-running open-air events not once, but twice a year. The Pecan Street Festival has two iterations — fall and spring – and this year’s spring version is right around the corner. Paying homage to the fact that downtown’s numbered streets were once named for types of trees, the arts & crafts extravaganza takes over the 24-block stretch of 6th Street between Brazos Street and IH35 as it used to be called “Pecan Street.” The free family event has been taking place for 33 years and shows no signs of slowing down with its musical entertainment, artisan booths, craft displays, and local food and drinks galore.

Piano Art Exhibit – “Play Me, I’m Yours” in Austin, TX 2011

Photo Credit – Peter Tsai (austinphotobook.com)

Never a place to shy away from great tunes, the “live music capital of the world” welcomes a quirky project called “Play Me I’m Yours” to town for the entire month of April. Sponsored by Art Alliance Austin, created by articst Luke Jerram and curated by Austin artist Johnny Walker, the experience places pianos in public places throughout town and invites passersby to sit down and play a tune. Even if you’ve never touched a piano in your life, there’s no pressure to knock out a master performance; it’s all in fun, and if you stick around long enough to see who else gives it a try, you never know who might take a seat at the piano and fill the streets with a concerto of epic proportions.
