Carlos Santana Live at the ACL Stage, 9/14/2011

Even though he’s been racking up Top Ten hits since the 1960′s, Carlos Santana is hardly slowing down. Having collaborated with countless international superstars in the world of music – perhaps most notably on the late-90′s hit “Smooth” with Matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas, Santana’s appeal is broad and long-lasting. His September 14 appearance at the ACL Live Stage promises more of the same varied hits he’s been making for the past five decades, as well as new songs from his latest album, “Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time.” Michael Franti & Spearhead (the folks behind the 2009 song “Say Hey! I Love You”) open the show before Santana graces the stage.

Tickets: $90-130
Doors open at 6 pm; show starts at 7:30
Moody Theater, W Hotel, 310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd.

The Oasis

“What was the name of that place where we went for drinks to watch the sunset?” out-of-towners will ask whenever they come back to Austin for a second, third or fourth visit. Chances are, the answer is The Oasis. Nestled into a hillside high above Lake Austin, the laid-back, locally-owned seafood-and-tex-mex eatery is a favorite destination for entertaining guests. Makes sense, considering the breathtaking views and the fact that patrons are all encouraged to clink glasses at the very moment the sun sets beyond the horizon every night. The Oasis hosts its own live band karaoke night on Wednesdays and also has live music Thursday through Sunday nights.

Austin Fashion Week 2011

With more than 150 events between August 20-27, Austin Fashion Week takes the city by (very stylish) storm and adds a little hit of chic to an otherwise laid-back locale. The week’s signature events, from jewelry and accessories showcases to runway presentations, take place each night at The Driskill hotel in the heart of downtown on 6th Street, while dozens of other official (and in the spirit of grand Austin occasions, likely a few unofficial) events in various parts of the city. The week culminates with the Austin Fashion Awards, hosted by syndicated radio personality Kim Iversen on the ACL Live stage inside the Moody Theater at the W Hotel downtown. Badges, VIP packages and individual event tickets are available via the event’s official website.

Movies in the Park (Finale)

To cap off a seven-month series of free movies in the park interlaced with opportunities for the community to learn about important non-profit organizations, The Expedition School — in conjunction with the Austin Parks Foundation and a sponsorship courtesy of the Alamo Drafthouse – presents the Reel Paddling Film Festival on Saturday, August 13. The event brings together the year’s best professional and amateur films about canoeing, sea kayaking, whitewater sports, fishing and more. For thrill seekers, competitors and adventurers alike, the day will also include a series of paddle races, as well as 1K, 5K and 10K races.
