Just as its name implies, Simplicity Wine & Eats offers… well, simplicity. With a comprehensive but decidedly un-fussy menu of wines and tapas, the local watering hole boasts a phenomenal happy hour Tuesdays through Fridays from 4 to 7 pm: all bottled and draft beers are $2, all draft beer pitchers are $5, all wines by the glass are $5, bottle prices are reduced by 15 percent, and handmade tapas (all the usual suspects are there: fruits and cheeses, chips and dips, and even brie, sausage and edamame — not all together, of course) are offered at half price.  Nestled firmly in the Rosedale/Allandale neighborhood, the easy-to-love local spot is easy to find on Burnet Road.

This Weekend: Austin City Limits Music Festival Brings the Heat

photo from aclfestival.com

The annual mega-festival known as ACL rolls back into town this weekend, keeping attendees entertained with 130 bands gracing its eight stages from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. Offering something for everyone, headliners range from the legendary Stevie Wonder and the controversial Kanye West to hipster favorite Arcade Fire and the ever-steady, workplace-friendly rock of Coldplay. Although the festival is sold out with the exception of one-day Sunday passes for $90, tickets are available at face value on Craigslist (buyer beware!) from independent ticket holders forced to bow out at the last minute because of scheduling conflicts. Temperatures are expected to soar this weekend, so prepare to stay hydrated and be mindful of the heat.

Sunday passes: $90 from the official ACL Fest website
This Friday-Sunday, September 16-18, 2011 at Zilker Park

Tonight in Austin: I Art Congress

In its own words, I Art Congress, the new, free monthly art event taking place on one of the most well-known streets in the Lone Star State “showcases the avenue in a fun, participatory, easy, and consolidated way so that people can discover the broad variety of arts, entertainment, dining, shopping, and nightlife that’s happening on Congress Avenue.” An informal collective of Congress Avenue museums and galleries, led by Austin Details Art + Photo along with support by the Downtown Austin Alliance, the new monthly series of themed open-house experiences offers a shot of culture deep in the weird, wild heart of Texas. Take a stroll down the city’s most central sidewalk after 6:30 pm tonight (Thursday, September 8th) to see what all the fuss is about. Admission to participating museums and attractions is free.
