Cool Spot: Koriente

Koriente

The hand-painted message on the back wall of Koriente (above) explains it best… and in 2009, that plan came to fruition; Koriente has been serving up bibimbap, spring rolls and curries to the hungry downtown masses ever since.  Tucked away on Sabine Street between 6th and 7th, Koriente offers a lunch buffet of salad, miso soup and Koriente pickles to accompany your entree, and they have a full beer selection to complement your dinner.  Aside from healthy Asian-inspired comfort dishes, Koriente is also a tea house, with a variety of black and green teas from which to choose.  The quirky interior and friendly service send it over the top and make it worth the trek downtown any day (or night) of the week.

Laugh It Up at the Moontower Comedy & Oddity Fest

Moontower Comedy Fest 2012

In Austin, we have two globally-renowned music festivals, an interactive festival, several film festivals, and even an annual celebration of Eeyore’s birthday; with a quirk factor and penchant for big events as grand as ours, it stands to reason we’d eventually get around to hosting a comedy festival too. And since we’re all about enjoying the best of everything, the Moontower Comedy Festival’s driving forces are no small potatoes; The Onion, Esquire Magazine and Funny Or Die are the architects of next week’s side-splitting affair.

Cap City Comedy Club and the Paramount Theatre will host comic legend Steven Wright, SNL “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Meyer and snark genius Aziz Ansari, as well as dozens of up-and-coming comedians, at various events running April 25-28.  Badges, VIP passes and single-performance tickets for most shows can be purchased at moontowercomedyfestival.com.

This Weekend: Celebrate Earth Day, Austin-Style

Earth Day

Every spring since 1970, those concerned about the environment have urged all of us to pause for at least one day and consider their impact on the world around us. This year is no exception, and as the sustainability movement picks up speed and recognition, Earth Day (Sunday, April 22) will be an event to remember. The Earth Day Austin event at the airplane hangar on Mueller Boulevard will host a family friendly event complete with petting zoo, eco-maze, arts & crafts, speakers and entertainment. The event runs from noon until 6 pm.

Sunday, April 22, noon-6 pm
4550 Mueller Central (see website for map, schedule and details)

Coming Soon: Art City Austin

Art City Austin 2012

Austin is undeniably an artistic town, but we’re admittedly known more for our music than any other artistic discipline in particular. Along with other events of its kind, the annual outdoor festival known as Art City Austin seeks to change that perception with what it aptly calls a “temporary art utopia.”  Perhaps needing to seek utopia amid the stress of tax day, guests can explore art galore for purchasing or just no-strings-attached perusing and appreciating.  Local food trucks turn out in spades along Cesar Chavez as well, making it as much a culinary feast as it is a visual one, and an event ticket also grants free admission to several permanent museums (like the Blanton) around town. Now, that’s utopia indeed.

Saturday, April 14, 10am to 6pm
Sunday, April 15, 11am to 6pm
Cesar Chavez Street from Lavaca to Lamar, plus the 1st Street Bridge

Now Open: The Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane

Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane

It’s true what they say: the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas.  If the Alamo Drafthouse has anything to say about it, our love of pop culture and cinema in particular should be celebrated with abandon and absolute geekery far and wide; that’s why they’re expanding their empire to include a new location: the Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane which opened earlier this month.

Prior to its arrival, the Alamo South Lamar was the southernmost theater in the doggedly beloved entertainment empire.  Just like the other drafthouses, the Slaughter location has full food and drink service via wait staff and special events to spare.  That’s the Alamo for you… just doing its part to make movie night that much cooler.
