Movies in the Park (Finale)

To cap off a seven-month series of free movies in the park interlaced with opportunities for the community to learn about important non-profit organizations, The Expedition School — in conjunction with the Austin Parks Foundation and a sponsorship courtesy of the Alamo Drafthouse – presents the Reel Paddling Film Festival on Saturday, August 13. The event brings together the year’s best professional and amateur films about canoeing, sea kayaking, whitewater sports, fishing and more. For thrill seekers, competitors and adventurers alike, the day will also include a series of paddle races, as well as 1K, 5K and 10K races.

Women in Jazz

Funded and supported in part by the City of Austin’s cultural arts division, the Women in Jazz series has been showcasing a broad range of emerging and established jazz talent since 1994, even supporting amateur jazz cats to learn the basics through special workshops hosted every year and capped off with a concert from a national headliner. This year, Grammy winner Norman Brown and veteran saxophonist Richard Elliot take the stage, along with vocalist Pamela Hart and saxophonist Charmin Greene.

Violet Crown

Austin has no shortage of awesome movie theaters, thanks to entrepreneur Tim League and the fine folks at the Alamo Drafthouse, but now there’s yet another reason to celebrate the town’s commitment to great films: Violet Crown Cinema. Although it might be seen by some as competition for the Alamo, word has it the two companies have been playing rather nicely together, with the Alamo greeting the Violet Crown warmly and openly noting the coolness of its elite selection of art and documentary films. Nestled into the 2nd Street district with its own in-house lounge, a screening at Violet Crown is the perfect cultural amuse bouche to a late, upscale dinner at any number of nearby eateries, including Malaga (tapas), La Condesa (gourmet interior Mexican), Lambert’s (upscale bbq) or La Taverna (Italian).

Movies in the Pool at Deep Eddy

Most summer memories include pool time and air-conditioned movie theaters, and the Austin Parks & Recreation Department saw fit to cut out the middleman and just merge the two. Hence its Splash Party Movie Nights, hosting a family-friendly movie at Deep Eddy Pool every Saturday night throughout the summer. Inflate your inner tube and hop into the pool at dusk this Saturday for a showing of Megamind and spend some quality time with either your kids, the kid within you… or both. Movie Nights run every Saturday through early August.

$3 entry fee; $2 or $1 for children, depending on age

CowParade Austin 2011

If you hear a stampede running through town the last week of this month, well… actually, we’re not sure what to tell you. But there will, indeed, be a cow parade, when more than 100 cow installations made by local artists will take over the town in and around various hotels, restaurants and other locales. CowParade has been traveling the world over since it began in Chicago in 1999, fostering local art scenes, providing public entertainment, supporting education and benefiting childrens’ charities in each city where the Parade takes place. Now Austin gets its turn, with a preview on July 27 at the Long Center on the south shore of Town Lake and the event itself making moo-ves (sorry, couldn’t resist) all around town through late October. At the event’s completion, an art auction will raise money for Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.
