Yeehaw! The Austin Rodeo is Rarin’ to Go!

Austin Rodeo

Texas, in a way, is like a big boiling chili pot of Southwestern goodness, made with ingredients like cowboy culture, barbecue, and the rodeo. The third of that series is in full swing throughout mid-March as Rodeo Austin ropes its steers, honors it country roots and cranks up the tunes: musical performances this year include guitar-wielding superstars like Gavin DeGraw, Sara Evans and The Band Perry, to name a few.  And of course, there’s the spectacle of the rowdy ropin’ rodeo itself, with its ten-gallon showmanship and its loyalty to grand Texan traditions like pig races, petting zoos, and yes, even mutton-bustin’. Get your boots on and check out all the deep-fried awesomeness before it hangs up its hat and lasso on March 24.

Travis County Expo Center, 7311 Decker Lane
March 9-24; Opens weekdays at 4 pm and weekends at 11 am

This Weekend: Let the “Architects of Air” Luminarium Experience Blow Your Mind

architects of air

In 1992, the Architects of Air interactive light exhibit debuted outside the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and it’s been mesmerizing audiences around the globe ever since. This month, the acclaimed luminarium experience visits Austin, bringing with it a halting sense of ethereal majesty. Visitors remove their shoes and step into a large-scale, hand-made PVC structure vividly illustrating light and form in a visually stunning display throughout the elaborate journey from one end of the space to the other. Tickets are available for $8 per person on the day of visit; The Long Center proudly hosts the exhibit through January 20th.

Exhibit runs January 14-20; see the Long Center website for details.

Ring in the New Year, Austin-Style

2012 Austin New Year's Eve

There’s no shortage of amazing celebratory options for New Year’s Eve in the weird, wild heart of Texas; almost predictably, you can practically walk down any given street within a mile of downtown and find something fun to do. Since New Year’s Eve tends to draw out even the most introverted of folks, though, it’s wise to book your plans in advance, particularly if you’re planning on hitting one of the more popular soirees in town. CultureMap:Austin has kindly provided a listing of events from which to choose; there’s Willie Nelson’s big bash at the W in the Moody Theater, the Uncle Billy’s BBQ party on Lake Travis, the New Year’s Eve singalong at the Alamo Ritz on 6th, live shows at nearly every music venue in town, and much much more. New Line Cinema even has a movie out called New Year’s Eve… what better evening could there possibly be to check it out? Wherever you go and whatever you do, though, get home safely so you can begin 2012 in one piece. Note: taxis are available 24/7 via Yellow Cab Austin.

Salsa Saturday at Gloria’s

Blossoming in Cuba in the 1920s and later taking much of Central and South America by storm, salsa dancing has become quite the global phenomenon over the past decade. Beginners and aficionados alike can convene at Gloria’s in the Domain this Saturday to let the rhythm move their feet… and whether you just need a little brushing up on your technique or you’ve never set foot on a dance floor in your life, group instruction is available at 10 pm before the DJ officially takes over and spins until 2 a.m. Salsa nights at Gloria’s are structured in a way that allows dancers without partners pair up easily for either lessons or the real deal itself. Oh, and the enchiladas aren’t bad either; be sure to snag some before the kitchen closes at 11 pm.

Saturday, 10 pm-2 am
$10 cover after 10 pm; “nice casual” dress code enforced
